Lansing is the third town making up Ashe County, but is by far the smallest (in terms of population).

Revitalization in West Jefferson

As with many small towns, West Jefferson’s business district struggled as larger discount stores moved into the area. Local business owners got together and created a plan to revitalize the downtown of West Jefferson to not only attract tourists, but also to attract people interested in moving to or retiring in Ashe County.

An undertaking to revitalize the downtown has successfully neard copmletion and West Jefferson has now become a friendly pedestrian town. The revitalization of the downtown included an arts district, street murals, green spaces, and a pocket park. Ashe County Arts even sponsor a downtown bi-monthly “Gallery Crawl” and the pocker park serves as a music venue during the summer months. Throughout West Jefferson’s downtown area you can find art galleries, specialty shops, an excellent choice of restaurants, a farmer’s market, antique shops, the Florence Thomas School of Art, and North Carolina’s oldest cheese factory Ashe County Cheese.
