Sparta is a small town in the mountains of North Carolina. It’s known for being “miles away” from other cities in NC but also close enough to other towns when you need to get away for a short time. Sparta is located in the heart of Alleghany County, a county with nearly 11,155 residents.

Friendly people, relaxing atmosphere, and beautiful countryside is what you get when you live in this town. Rolling hills and farmland are prevalent in Sparta. The New River and the Blue Ridge Parkway offers outdoor fun for you and your family. Crouse Park is a local outdoor spot for community gatherings, too.

If you want to do something outdoors, here are a few options:

Dusty Trails Outfitters. Book a canoeing, kayaking, tubing, camping, or fishing trip with this outfitter. This location is 26 minutes away from the heart of Sparta, NC.
New River Campground and Canoe. Tent and RV sites, cabins, tubing, kayaking, canoeing river trips down class 1, 2, and 3 rapids. Only 10 minutes away from Sparta.
New River State Park. A very popular place for camping, fishing, tubing, canoeing, and recreation. A bit of a drive at 30 minutes, but worth the drive.

Demographics of Sparta, NC

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,817 people living in Sparta, NC. Of that number, 825 are households and 441 are families. The median income for a family was $37,596.

Ninety-four percent of the population is white with the remaining population are Hispanic or Latino and African-American.

History of Sparta, NC

James H. Parks was one of three businessman who donated land for the current city of Sparta. He recommended the name after the Greek city. His store stood in the same place as the current ABC store in town. The city was established in 1866.
