What Deep Gap, NC, is known for

Deep Gap, NC is a small unincorporated community located in the northwestern corner of North Carolina. The area is most widely known as the home of the great American folk artist, Arthel “Doc” Watson. Although he lost his sight before his second birthday, he was one of the most influential musicians of his time period. Doc is most widely known for his flatpicking and crosspicking techniques on the guitar. Throughout his career he produced over 50 albums and won 7 Grammy Awards.

Deep gap is also known as one of the prominent hunting grounds of the pioneer Daniel Boone. Boone is known throughout the Western North Carolina, Kentucky and Virginia areas as a remarkable hunter. There are several tall tales about the life of Daniel Boone which have expanded over the years. He was a remarkable pioneer, explorer and avid hunter.

New River Corn Maze

New River Corn Maze opens in September each year and provides families with a fun-filled day of exploration while enjoying the beautiful fall foliage. The maze is located on the historic Brown Family Farm. They provide hayrides, picnics by the river and the possibility of getting lost in the corn maze. You are able to choose from a wide variety of pumpkins in the Pick-Your-Own pumpkin field including ornamental and edible.

Mountains-to-Sea Trail

The town of Deep Gap is lucky enough to contain a portion of the Mountain-to-Sea trail. If you love a long hike through the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, this could be a section of the trail you don’t want to miss out on. The path through the High Country is from Beacon Heights to Devils garden Overlook with a distance of 90 miles. You may feel as though you are in the middle of nowhere, but will mostly be traveling parallel to the Parkway.

Cascade Falls

Cascade Falls is a beautiful waterfall located minutes from downtown Deep Gap. It is a relatively easy hike, approximately 1.2 miles, but be careful as there are a lot of steps. The short hike provides two separate overlooks. Pay attention to the signage along the trail, as it warns to stick to the main trail. If you are looking for the perfect hike for the whole family, Cascade Falls in E.B. Jeffress Park is worth finding.

History of Deep Gap, NC

The county of Watauga (meaning “beautiful water”) was formed in 1849 in the northwestern region of North Carolina. There are several small mountain towns enveloped in the county. One of these is Deep Gap, home to renowned musician Doc Watson. The county is also home to Appalachian State University and Tweetsie Railroad. Tweetsie is the oldest theme park located in North Carolina. The engine #12 Tweetsie was the original engine which traveled between Tennessee and North Carolina. She gets her name from the sound her whistle made coming through the mountains.
